Russia and Turkey are working on an alternative to the Mir payment system

Ambassador in Ankara Yerkhov: Russia and Turkey are working on an alternative to the “Mir” payment system

Moscow and Ankara are working on an alternative to the “Mir” payment system, said Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Turkey Alexei Yerkhov.

“The work is going on. However, it would be premature to summarize its results,” the diplomat said.

According to him, the parties need to assess the prospects of the upcoming tourist season.

“Of course, financial sanctions also affect the tourism sector,” Yerkhov said.

Mir cards were accepted by five Turkish banks. Problems began in the fall after the U.S. Treasury Department said it was ready to impose sanctions for working with the payment system. In September the state-owned Halkbank, Ziraat Bank and VakıfBank, as well as the private Isbank and Denizbank suspended the servicing of cards.

Director of the Russian-Turkish Business Council Alexei Egarmin noted that an alternative method of payment may appear closer to the summer.

Problems with the use of Russian cards also arose in Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
